Leptospirosis : Cautious when walking your dog after typhon/heavy rain

Leptospirosis : Cautious when walking your dog after typhon/heavy rain

Hong Kong is continuously facing extreme weather conditions. During heavy rain, it is undoubtedly challenging to allow dogs outdoors. However, even when the weather clears, owners must not be complacent. "Leptospirosis" is a lethal pathogen that lurks in grasslands, urban areas, and rural regions, propagated through waterlogging and rainwater runoff. If unfortunate enough to be infected, dogs will succumb to the disease within a few days. Let us now examine the symptoms and preventive measures pertaining to Leptospirosis.

What is Leptospira?

The Leptospira, a bacterium, is responsible for causing leptospirosis in mammals. It parasitizes rodents, rabbits, and other wild animals, spreading through their urine. When pets come into contact with infected urine, particularly through oral, ocular, nasal, or wound entry, they are susceptible to contracting this disease.

During rainy weather, there is a chance for Leptospira to be carried along with contaminated water sources, flowing into streams, ponds, or lurking in muddy road surfaces, thriving in damp environments for several weeks. Therefore, it is imperative for owners to exercise caution, especially after large-scale flooding events.

Symptoms  of leptospirosis infection

Dogs infected with Leptospira may exhibit varying degrees of symptoms. Common manifestations include fever, lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle pain. These initial signs resemble those of a cold or gastrointestinal illness. However, if left untreated, the bacteria will swiftly begin to attack different organs, potentially leading to renal dysfunction, hepatic inflammation, jaundice, and hemorrhage. Severe cases can result in organ failure and mortality within a few days.

Another alarming aspect of Leptospira is its high level of contagion. Once a dog is infected, strict isolation is necessary to prevent the transmission to other dogs. Owners must also take precautions to protect themselves, as leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease, with documented cases of human infection recorded by Department of Health.

Prevent leptospirosis

To prevent leptospirosis, there are four key methods:

1. Avoidance of contaminated water sources

When venturing outdoors with your pets, particularly in natural environments, it is advisable to closely supervise them and prevent them from coming into contact with unknown water sources. Additionally, after heavy rainfall, it is important to steer clear of stagnant water within urban areas.

2. Vaccination

Ensuring that your pets receive regular vaccinations against Leptospira is crucial in preventing the disease. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate vaccination schedule.

3. Environmental hygiene

Maintaining a clean and hygienic environment for your pets is essential. Regularly disinfecting their living areas, removing stagnant water sources, and preventing access to potentially contaminated areas can help minimize the risk of infection.

4. Health check-ups

Regularly taking your pets to veterinary clinics for health check-ups ensures that their immune systems and overall well-being are in good condition. In the event of suspected symptoms, seeking prompt medical attention and providing the veterinarian with relevant exposure history is of utmost importance.

By following these four preventive measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of leptospirosis in your pets and yourself.
